Wish You Knew How to Explain What Makes Your Business Different? Here’s Where to Start.

You know your business has something special. You pour your heart into it, you care deeply about your clients/customers/products/service, and you know you’re damn good at what you do. You just need to get in front of the right people and tell them what you do for those sales to start rolling in, right....
But when it comes to actually saying what makes you different? Why people should pick you over the competition? Cue the sweaty palms and the awkward “umm I just… actually really care about my clients?” 😅
My friend, I’ve been there. And so have literally all of the business owners we both follow and admire. So first things first: if you’ve ever said “I wish I knew how to explain why someone should choose me,” you’re not alone. And you’re not broken. It’s just that no one ever taught you how to figure that out.
Let’s aim to fix that.

Why It’s So HARD to See Your Own Magic
You’re inside your business every day. You’re juggling all the things. You’re doing great work, learning and growing within your business all the time. You just do what you do and you understand that perfectly well. But when it comes to stepping back and defining what makes you stand out, your brain goes foggy. Because you’re too close to it. It can be so easy to forget to make things super clear for everyone but at the same time, sometimes we just don't have the right words to make it easier for ourselves to put that information out there in a digestiable, jargon free way.
And if you’re in a busy industry (👋🏻 hello, I’m a brand designer in a sea of brand designers!), that pressure to “stand out” can feel extra intense.
So How Do You Figure Out What Makes You Different?
Here are some points to work through and ask yourself.
Let’s take that step back, break it down into a few places to start:
👉🏻 Your People
Instead of trying to appeal to everyone who might want what you offer, zoom in on your favourite kind of client:
What do they need that goes deeper than your service?
What’s going on in their life or business when they come to you?
What are they craving in an experience?
Knowing who you’re really here for helps you build a brand that speaks directly to them. I know I know, you have heard this all before 'speak to everyone, speak to no one' etc etc but stick with me....
Demographics are out.
Psychographics are IN.
So what do your people really care about?
If you sell services:→ What problem are you solving? What’s keeping them stuck?
If you sell products:→ What desire are you fulfilling? What lifestyle are you enabling? What’s the feeling they’re buying into?
And either way:→ What are the objections, blocks, or fears that are stopping them from buying from you?
If you’re brand new and don’t have a pool of past clients to look at, start with who you want to work with. Let those thoughts grow and evolve as your business does. Just because you’re new doesn’t mean you have to say yes to everyone (although let’s be real - that can be a painful but fast way to weed out the wrong-fit clients)
Here’s what that evolution can look like in a real business (Mine!):
🧡 I help small businesses
🧡 I help new small businesses
🧡 I help new, solo small business owners
🧡 I help new, solo small business owners who don't know where to start
🧡 I help new, solo small business owners who don't know where to start and suck at/hate design
🧡 I help new-ish, solo small business owners who don't know where to start and suck at/hate design, whos business is growing and they no longer have time for tasks that hold them back/don't bring them joy.
Do you see how that grows from a flat demographic… into a real human with a relatable problem I can solve? Let's take this to the next level.....
👉🏻 Define Your Vibe + Values
This isn’t about picking random buzzwords that sound good on a homepage. It’s about asking real questions like:
What do you truly care about?
What kind of energy do you bring into your work?
What do you want people to feel when they interact with your brand?
What are your non-negotiables and boundaries when it comes to business and clients?
Are you calm and grounding? Bold and spicy? Quirky and supportive?
Your vibe is a huge part of what makes you different - even if you offer a similar service to someone else in the same niche. Which means this part of defining your brand isn’t fluff… it’s strategy.
So remember that pool of people with design problems I’m helping to solve? By knowing and living my values, I naturally filter that pool. The right ones come closer. The wrong ones? Move on and that’s a good thing.
My business values:
🌟 Creativity - this is my creative outlet, and when I am allowed to be my creative self and take creative lead on projects I do my best work. I am not here to be a pixel-pusher, but I am also not here to dictate. I want to hear your ideas, I want us to bounce ideas around, I want and welcome your creative input too 100%!
🌟 Value - I aim to add real value to your business. Simple as that. But I also want value in return: value my skills, my opinions, and my time, and I will return that tenfold with everything I give to your brand.
🌟 Supportive - I’m an over-sharer (lol), so you won’t just get pretty graphics you’ll get pep talks, resources, guidance, check-ins, and hype. I work in ways that keep both of us comfortable, whether that’s time scales or communication style. I’m patient. I’m proud to be inclusive and a safe space for all. I meet you where you are and I love working with clients who share those values, too.
Do you see how my values not only guide the way I work - they help shape the kind of clients I attract?
These values are simple. But if I sense a client might not share them, or won’t respect them? Then it’s a no from me.
And that’s okay! Not everyone will share your values, your vibe, or your worldview. But defining these things helps me thin out that pool of people I’m speaking to so the right ones feel like I’m speaking directly to them.
Let’s look again at my people and how that picture has shifted with all this added clarity:
🧡 I help solo small business owners who don’t know where to start, suck at/hate design, whose businesses are growing, and who no longer have time for tasks that hold them back or don’t bring them joy.
🧡 And now, I know they’re also looking for support not just unique visuals - because they’re nervous about investing, overwhelmed by the process, and want someone who gets them.
Ready to expand this again? Let's keep going....
👉🏻 Look at Your Process
Your how is often as unique as your what and your why. Think about:
What’s different about the way you work?
What kind of experience do you create?
What do your clients say they loved about working with you?
And if you don’t know? Ask them! Testimonials and client feedback are gold dust for finding your magic. Again, got no testimonials? Ask your friends/followers why they like or follow you, what is one unique thing about you? You will get the answers you’d never think of to describe yourself.
My process is very supportive, collaborative and friendly. Making me ideal for new businesses, introverts, neurodiverse or nervous folks. The biggest take away my clients get from me (besides the wonderful brand identity and sense that those ducks are all lined up) is the increase in confidence, knowledge, vision and motivation. I know this because I asked them! I don't need to see metrics or analytics, I have heard all I need from them - my job is done 😌
Do you see how those three simple point have now expanded? People + Values + Process = a really clear picture of who you serve, how you help, and what makes you different.
Still struggling? Still craving a golden nugget of information.....
Here’s the Real Secret: The Difference Is You.
Let me bring this around to my own business again as the example…
I’m a brand designer. It’s a busy market. There are SO many talented designers out there; big agencies, viral creatives, people with massive followings. And I am NOT one of them haha.
And honestly? That used to freak me out. I’d wonder how I was meant to stand out. But here’s what I’ve learned:
But none of that makes me “less than” just because I have a smaller following or a quieter approach.
Because the difference isn’t just in the design, it’s in:
The way I work
My values I bring
My vibe I create
The experience I offer
The energy I bring to each client relationship
The people I invite in
And the ones who resonate with how I show up through my content, my voice, my values
It’s not just about what I do. It’s about how I do it - and who I do it for.
My people? They’re creative. Often introverted. Often neurodivergent. They’re looking for branding that feels joyful, bold, bright, and different. They’re tired of DIY-ing everything and just want to feel seen, supported, and quirky as hell while they build something beautiful.
So I don’t waste time trying to sound like everyone else.I lean into who I actually am.
Because no one else is me 🥰 And that’s what sets me apart.
When You Lean Into Being Authentically You, It Becomes So Much Easier to Stand Out
Fake it ‘til you make it is OUT.
Authentic, truthful, personal, and even a little vulnerable? Very much IN.
Brand strategy isn’t about pretending you’re the biggest, the boldest, or the fanciest. It’s about communicating the truth of your business in a way that clicks with the people who are meant for you.
And behind the strategy, that’s what a good brand identity helps you do - show up clearly, confidently, and consistently as yourself.
So next time you feel that “I don’t know how to explain why I’m different” wobble rise up, take a breath. You don’t have to be wildly original or shout the loudest.
You just have to be recognisably you.
Here’s a pitch-perfect example to show you what that can sound like:
“I design colourful, personality-packed brand identities for solo small business owners who are ready to stop blending in — folks who like to keep things small but definitely dream big. My clients are often new to business, introverted, or neurodivergent — and totally over the DIY hustle. They’re ready for branding that feels so them, looks professional, and helps them actually get seen. With me, it’s never one-size-fits-all. It’s supportive, collaborative, and full of joyful design magic that reflects who you are and where you’re going with confidence.”
I’m not reinventing the wheel here and I don’t need to.
The people who resonate with this are already drawn to my style, my voice, and my vibe. I’m mixing up my content so they can understand what I bring, but also so they can get to know me. Because ultimately, it’s my brand as a whole - not just my services - that sets me apart.
